Permission to possess non-prohibited fire arms for self or crop protection is called Arms/Gun License.

Arms Act, 1959 and Arms Rules, 1962.

There are 2 types of licenses
(a) Form-III for self protection, and
(b) Form-V for crop protection

For self protection (with Taluk/District/State jurisdiction) – District Magistrate.
For crop protection (within the taluk) – Tahashildar
For crop protection (more than one taluk) – District Magistrate
For extension of jurisdiction for more than one state – Sate Home dept.

[a] Residential proof such as Ration Card, Election I.D. Card, Passport copy, Pan Card etc.
[b] R.T.C copies of agricultural properties
[c] Income Tax returns copy
[d] Other supplementary documents

Person may apply for license in prescribed form to the concerned Licensing Authority. The Licensing Authority will refer the application to the concerned police officer to ascertain about his/her antecedents. Further on verification of the documents provided by the applicant and the police report, license will be issued to the applicant.

Different rates of fees are applicable for different types of weapons as prescribed by the Government. Maximum existing fee is Rs. 200/-

For crop protection ML and BL guns only. For self protection all types of weapons(non-prohibited).

Permission can be granted by the Licensing Authority to possess upto 3 weapons.

It is upto the discretion of the Licensing Authority to grant time for purchase of weapons.

Maximum 3 years from the date of issue.

License holder should apply for renewal to the Licensing Authority on or before the expiry date with original license and necessary renewal fees.

One has to give prior information to the Licensing Authority regarding sale of weapon to a licensed person or a licensed dealer.

When a license holder transfers or shifts to any other place, he may re-register his arms license with the jurisdictional licensing authority by giving the details of license, address proof and NOC from the original licensing authority.
